1. What do you do?

As the Director of Field Marketing & Events at Flock Safety, where our mission is to eliminate crime while respecting privacy, I am responsible for developing and executing a strategic plan for revenue growth through field marketing programs and events.

We help build awareness by attending, presenting, and hosting events like conferences and lunch-and-learns. My team works to maintain a consistent brand voice and generate interest in our products. These events range from small hosted roundtable discussions with ten customers to a 10K+ person tradeshow, where we put together a booth larger than a dorm room!

 

2. What's the coolest part of your job?

Flock Safety is similar to being at Georgia Tech in that you are surrounded by super-motivated and intelligent people. The projects people are tackling to help eliminate crime throughout our country are astounding.

Specifically, in my job, I get to work cross-functionally to bring our story to life out in the field. The engineers supply our hardware to be displayed, and designers create eye-catching designs to attract people. Then, our sales team delivers engaging stories to attract prospective customers. It's such a team sport to bring a successful event to reality, and I enjoy getting to bring it all together.

 

3. Why are you passionate about it?

Being a woman in the tech industry can be challenging; only 28% of the U.S. workforce in STEM professions are women! Helping to serve as a leader and create a forum to support and empower women has been one of the most gratifying parts of my job.

Over the past few years, I've been on the board of our women's employee resource group, Women of Flock. Since its inception two years ago, we've grown to a membership of 140 women.

4. Which skills from Georgia Tech and your LMC degree have helped you be successful in this career?

This statement may seem like a no-brainer, but communication is one of the most valuable skills I learned in LMC. In a cross-functional leadership role like mine, it is essential to effectively communicate the problem experienced, your proposed solution, and the desired outcomes.

The ability to understand complex technology and tell the story of how it will change your audiences' world in a digestible way is something that Georgia Tech's LMC program is uniquely qualified to do. That and my time management skills learned from meeting all those reading and writing deadlines!

 

Meg presenting 5. What's your #1 tip for students and alumni interested in your field?

Apply for internships in different roles and industries. I 100% thought I wanted to be in television production, but then I found that the environment was not for me after an internship with a national news organization.

Then, I went to work on the advertising team at a local newspaper and enjoyed the website development side a lot. That led me to explore business development and product management roles that morphed into my past ten years of marketing in the tech industry.

Also, be open to opportunities to connect with your classmates and stay in contact with them. You never know who will start their own company and need someone like you!
