Bolter Co-authors Book on Augmented and Virtual Reality in Contemporary Media Culture

Posted November 12, 2021

Jay Bolter, James and Mary Wesley Chair in New Media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, co-authored a book titled Reality Media published by MIT Press.

The book positions augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) firmly in contemporary media culture. As the latest media in a series of what the authors refer to as “reality media,” which place a layer of media between us and our perception of the world, AR and VR take their positions alongside film and television.

Fellow co-authors include Maria Engberg, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology at Malmö University and affiliate researcher at Georgia Tech, and Blair MacIntyre, professor in the School of Interactive Computing. Bolter and MacIntyre also codirect the Augmented Environments Lab at Georgia Tech.

A digital version of Reality Media will also launch in the coming months and will invite readers to visit a series of virtual rooms featuring interactivity, 3-D models, videos, images, and texts that explore the themes of the book.

The book is available for purchase on the MIT Press website.
