Overloads, Permits, & Waitlisting

What are overloads and permits?

All Georgia Tech courses are capped at a certain number of students. In the OSCAR Override System, a course overload is a permission to register for a course that is full.  A permit is a permission to register for a class that is designated for a special population (for instance, permission to enter a class that is major-restricted).

How may I request an overload or a permit for an LMC class?

Students may request overloads and permits for some LMC courses on the OSCAR override request system. Permit requests will generally be considered each Monday and Thursday until registration ends.  If a course does not appear in the OSCAR system for permitting, it most likely has the waitlist function enabled.

Do LMC classes allow waitlisting?

Generally speaking, courses that LMC and CM majors do not need specifically by number to graduate will have the waitlist enabled.  Approximately half of the LMC class offerings are available for waitlisting.  Students may add themselves to the waitlist for any available waitlisted class in the OSCAR registration system.

Why are the enrollment caps initially set at five?

In order to ensure that CM and LMC majors have access to classes which they need to complete degree requirements, we set the caps on the first day to 5 so that populations who register first do not take up all the seats in our classes. We will gradually increase the enrollments during the first week of Registration as time tickets for all GT students open up.

When should I take ENGL 1102?

All students should plan to take ENGL 1102 the spring semester after they have passed ENGL 1101. In the fall semester, most seats in ENGL 1101 and 1102 are reserved for incoming freshmen. GT students are required to complete ENGL 1101 and 1102 by the time they reach 30 hours.

How may I request an overload or permit for ENGL 1101 or 1102?

LMC does NOT issue overloads for ENGL 1101 or 1102.  Please choose from among available seats for these classes. In spring semesters, the waitlist function is enabled for these classes. Graduating seniors may contact jc.reilly@lmc.gatech.edu if they have not yet taken one of these courses.

Help! There are seats open in ENGL 1101 and 1102.  Why can’t I register?

If the ENGL 1101 or 1102 class has a section labeled HP1, HP2, HP3, HP3, HP4, or HP5, those courses are reserved specifically for Honors Program students, and are not open to the general population.

How may I request an overload for LMC 3403?

LMC uses the waitlist function for these classes; we do not issue overloads.

Why are some LMC 3403 courses major restricted?

Some LMC 3403 courses are about subjects that best suit the needs of a specific population.  For instance, LMC 3403-BA1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are restricted to Business Administration sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  We do not lift the major restriction for these sections.

Help! I’m a CS major! Why can’t I register for LMC 3403?

CS students are barred from taking LMC 3403 because they are now required to take the two-semester Junior Design sequence:  LMC 3431/CS 3312 and LMC 3432/CS 3311.  Please register for these courses instead.

Why can’t I register for LMC 2000, LMC 2200, LMC 2400, LMC 2700, LMC 2720, LMC 2730, LMC 3206, LMC 3314, LMC 3402, LMC 3406, LMC 37XX, or LMC 47XX?

LMC and CM majors as well as WST and FMS minors need these courses specifically by number to graduate, and we will not lift the major restriction for them at all.  But it may be possible to lift the major restriction for LMC 2400 in Phase 2.

Why are LMC 3204, LMC 3234, and LMC 4204 permit restricted?

These courses require permission from the instructor for registration. These courses generally only have space for fifteen students each and fill quickly.  Please contact the professor by e-mail with your GTID to request a permit.
